Ascential's Reach Across America Contest Final Results!

Thanks to all who participated in the Reach Across America Contest. It was a great success and a wonderful opportunity to share the gift of health outside your immediate geographic area. Congratulations to all of the winners, but especially Lisa Stroh who competed with a "super human" effort to win 1st place in every month of the contest and 1st place in the 3-month combined Grand Prize contest. Lisa took home $5,500 in cash (or $11,000 in Ascential product) in the last three months, and has also significantly expanded her business as well. Lisa worked extensively both inside and out of her geographic region and accrued double points on many occasions. She truly dominated this contest, coming in at nearly double the points of her nearest competitor.

Steve & Joni Michael also had a very strong showing in the contest, coming in 2nd to Lisa twice in the monthly contests and taking home the 2nd place prize of $1000 cash or $2000 of Ascential Product in the overall contest.

3rd place in the overall was earned by Kristi Pittman, who barely lost to Lisa in the May contest and persevered to come in with a strong 3rd place finish.

Probiotics and obesity

It seems every day we get more good news about probiotics. I just came across an article from the March 7 edition of FASEB Journal where one study indicates a relationship between gut micoflora, metabolism and glucose equilibrium. In the study, lean participants (mice) and their gut microflora were compared to obese participants (also mice). It seems gut microflora helps regulate how the human body uses insulin.

Also, in a paper published in Nature in December of 2006, it was reported that once obese people lost weight, their gut microflora reverted to what was observed in a lean person.

Look for more news about the relationship between a healthy metabolism and gut microflora in the coming months.

Omega 3 and colon cancer prevention

In the May 2008 edition of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, researchers studied the use of Omega 3 supplements as well as fish consumption in men over a period of 22 years. What was found was that the men who ate the most fish had a 40% decreased rate of developing colon and rectal cancers. When the scientists focused on omega 3 fatty consumption, they found a 26% decreased rate of developing colon or rectal cancer. Omega 3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and this may be how they help protect against cancer.

In this study, the alcoholics with cirrhosis had a 25% lower phagocytic activity (the cells that gobble up bad things) than the healthy participants. At the end of the study, the control group (no probiotics administered) had no change in immune function and the alcoholics who were given probiotics had normal immune function after 4 weeks.

Trans Fats and your health

"A high serum level of trans-monounsaturated fatty acids, presumably reflecting a high intake of industrially processed foods, is probably one factor contributing to increased risk of invasive breast cancer in women," wrote the researchers. "At this stage, we can only recommend limiting the consumption of processed foods, the source of industrially produced trans-fatty acid," they added.

Trans fats are used because they extend the shelf-life of foods and stabilize flavors. You'll find most of the trans-fats, in the Standard American Diet (SAD), in partially hydrogentated vegetable oil. Trace amounts are naturally occuring in dairy and meat.

A study done at Harvard in early 2008 showed a 100% increased risk of non-agressive prostate cancer of linked to increased trans fatty acid consumption.

Green tea and sports nutriton

In the world of nutrition news this week comes a study out of Brazil that says green tea may reduce the effect of oxidative stress caused by resistance exercise. We at Ascential have long known the potential of green tea and for that reason we have it in Relief, WeightRx, Ultra Nutrients, Ultra Antoxidants, and Ascential Lean.

Panza and co-workers recruited 14 healthy men aged between 19 and 30 to consume either water or green tea three times per day for seven days. The average polyphenol content of the tea was 771.0 micrograms per mL, while the average intake of green tea polyphenols was calculated to be 4.6 micrograms per day. After seven days of consuming the beverages, the volunteers were required to perform a bench press exercise (four sets, 10 to 4 repetitions). The researchers analysed blood samples and calculated the total antioxidant capacity according to the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) assay, and levels of reduced glutathione and lipid hydroperoxide.

According to the results, consumption of green tea was associated with a 64 per cent reduction in the levels of lipid hydroperoxide after exercise, while blood levels of polyphenols were approximately 27 per cent high before and after exercise. Moreover, post-exercise levels of glutathione, a protein that is important in protecting the body from oxidative (free radical) damage, were approximately 37 per cent higher in the green tea group. "There is evidence that supplementation with antioxidants may decrease the oxidation of blood GSH after exercise," stated the researchers. "Furthermore, our findings demonstrate that dietary strategies, such as daily GT intake, may also benefit the glutathione system of athletes by elevating blood GSH levels before and after effort."Consumption of green tea also provided pre-exercise benefits, with the pre-exercise FRAP value about 21 per cent higher compared with the control group."Consumption of green tea, a beverage rich in polyphenols, may offer protection against the oxidative damage caused by exercise, and dietary guidance for sports participants should be emphasised," concluded the researchers.
